About
Deeply driven by the rhythm of Motown, the soft graininess of the 70s folk scene and balanced out by the hollow moodiness of the 90s, Jessie's voice travels through the decades with ease.
Also a singer/songwriter, Jessie feels honored to be able to connect people to the music and lyrics of some of the world's greatest artists, past and present.
Music runs deep in those bones. From the rosebud lips of Grandma Barb, melting hearts in the 1950s with her renditions of Patsy Cline inside the dusty seaside bars of Astoria, to her pa Denny, rocking it out in bands across genres, decades, and always taking the time to sit in a quiet space and just live in music with her, from first sight - a tradition she has promised to pass on to her wee daughters. Performers already, belting out tunes and whipping their sweet curls about with abandon or getting drenched in Mommy and Daddy's lullabies.
As luck would have it, he also connected her with the musicians of Pure Jasper in early 2022 and the fit was perfect. They've been having loads of fun and putting their own flavor on songs you know and love ever since.
On the drum kit, Paul strives to deliver a solid beat with structure (and a few tasteful embellishments) while always looking for opportunities to collaborate with other members of Pure Jasper.
Playing drums since about the age of five, Paul is a self-taught drummer, inspired over the years by such greats as Manu Katche & Carter Beauford. He has been playing music off and on with Sam and Aaron for many years, in different bands and practice sessions. He has really elevated his playing with the formation of Pure Jasper along with the addition of Jessie as lead singer. The band is naturally drawn towards songs and styles that align with Paul's musical taste and desire for musical challenges.
Along with drumming behind the kit, you may catch Paul incorporating various percussion instruments into the performance, as well as playing keyboards on some of his favorite Pure Jasper covers.
Aaron began playing piano at about 5 years old, and quickly began formal lessons which lasted through grade school and high school years. His lessons focused on Classical study, and in parallel, he gravitated towards popular music and was covering songs by Billy Joel, Elton John, Journey, and others and even performing at coffee shops and wine bars as young as 8 years old. As Paul and Sam weaved their way through earlier bands, Aaron found himself standing in for rehearsals and taking piano parts in some performances as well.
In addition to piano, Aaron is a self-taught guitar player so as Pure Jasper was forming, his role changed from occasionally standing in on piano, to a key (no pun intended) musician regularly bouncing between keys and guitar to help develop the Pure Jasper sound.
Sam's musical journey was encouraged at an early age. His mother used to sing and play songs on her piano with him on her lap. Whether through osmosis or observation, something clicked, and a young Sam woke his parents early one morning by playing by ear the first movement of a Clementi sonatina he had heard his mother practice the previous evening. Piano lessons soon followed, and later clarinet and saxophone. A Guns N Roses concert spurred him to learn guitar at age 18, followed with the purchase of an electric guitar the day after high school graduation.
Sam played guitar for fun in college, alone and with friends, and later for his students as a 4th grade teacher, but was never in a "real" band until he was approached by a former student's grandfather who was putting together a band to showcase his granddaughter Ramsey's vocal talents. Originally recruited to play keyboards, Sam switched to bass when the original bass player left. The band, Sedna's Dream, is where Sam met Paul and Aaron. The group played a few shows a year for about 5 years, disbanding when Ramsey went to Oregon State University to study engineering. Paul invited Sam to continue playing together along with Aaron, but the addition of a strong vocalist was needed. Jessie filled that role admirably.
